Fred Irish served as Arizona State

University’s first head football coach,

leading the team from 1897 to 1906. Also

called “Cap” by students, he served as the

school’s first athletic director for 17 years.

George Schaeffer served as head football coach during the early World War 1 era, beginning

from 1914 and finishing his last season in 1916. During his tenure, he coached the Sun

Devils to two winning seasons.

George Cooper led the Sun Devil football program during the breakout of the Jazz Age

in 1919.

Ernest Wills’ first and only tenure as head football coach came during the team’s return to

varsity status. He also was head coach for the Sun Devil basketball and baseball teams.

Aaron McCreary led the football program for

seven seasons compiling a 25-17-4 record. He

also was a former Sun Devil football, basketball

and baseball player.

Ted Shipkey began his three-year tenure

as head football coach at the height of the

Great Depression era from 1930-32.

Rudy Lavik’s time as head coach saw

the arrival of ASU’s first African-American

football player, Emerson Harvey.

Under Dixie Howell’s career as head

football coach, the Sun Devils made

back-to-back appearances in the Sun

Bowl (1939-40)

Hilman Walker was promoted to head foot-

ball coach after serving as assistant coach

to Dixie Howell for four seasons.

Steve Coutchie became head coach for the

Sun Devils after varsity football resumed

following World War II.

As head football coach for 4 seasons,

Ed Doherty led the team to back-to-back

Salad Bowl appearances (1949-50). He

was also given the nickname “The Brain”

during his playing days at Boston College.
